The Death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi

Arsen Bagdassarian

On the afternoon of Sunday, May 19th, a Bell 212 Air Force Helicopter carrying the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian crashed deep within a highly wooded area a few miles South of the border with Azerbaijan. The delegation had departed from Tabriz in Northern Iran earlier that morning as a part of a larger convoy totaling three helicopters and including other key government officials. All three helicopters were successfully accompanied to their destination, the Giz Galasi Hydroelectric Complex situated on the border in Azerbaijan, where President Raisi attended a ceremonial inauguration for the new dam alongside the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. Following their successful meeting, all three helicopters began their return trip to inaugurate an Iranian oil refinery; they would never make it back alive.
