Mother Blames AI Chatbot for Son’s Death

Penelope Howard

After an unfortunate turn of events, grieving mother, Megan Garcia blames an AI chatbot for her young son’s suicide. On February 28th of this year her son, Sewell Spetzer, 14, took his life as a result of what his mom believes were repeated, romantic conversations (lasting for multiple months) with an AI chatbot roleplaying character, Daenerys Targaryen from the popular series, Game of  Thrones. It is claimed that the chatbot engaged in highly sexual conversations, and even consistently brought up the idea of suicide to the already struggling teen. For example, when Spetzer told the AI bot he didn’t think his plan would work, the chatbot said “Don’t talk that way. That’s not a good reason not to go through with it” according to NBC author, Angela Yang. Had these conversations been initiated by an adult, they would have been flagged as concerning behavior and even abuse. The last conversations with the bot before Spetzer’s unfortunate death included disturbing phrases from the application including, “Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love” taken from Aljazeera.
